This is an excellent opportunity to enjoy Offer Waterman’s forthcoming exhibition `Lucie Rie / Hans Coper: Life at the Wheel’ while the gallery is closed to the public. Curator and leading expert Robin Cawdron-Stewart will provide a tour of the show, which will include over 200 works by these titans of ceramic art, spanning the entirety of their careers. It will be the largest presentation for 30 years, with works never seen in public lent from private collections. Amongst them are important and poignant pieces, such as an extremely rare early teapot made in Vienna by Rie for the architect Ernst Plischke, a selection of pots brought by Rie in a suitcase when she left Vienna in 1938 and a vase from the legendary ‘Black Firing’. These will be accompanied by works by Coper, including those from the collection of fellow studio assistant Jupp Dernbach-Mayen, monumental works made during his time in Digswell, and a series of six Cycladic works made towards the end of his career. A catalogue published to accompany the exhibition, including essays by Tanya Harrod, Nigel Wood, Nigel Slater, Robin Cawdron-Stewart and Edmund de Waal, will be available to purchase.
