TOUR OF CHURCHES IN EALING, LONDON

Robert Drake will lead a fourth church event, this time mainly in the suburb of Ealing. It will take in first a little-known Roman Catholic temple of art in East Acton, St Aidan of Lindisfarne, completed in 1961 with contributions from many Catholic artists and converts, most notably Graham Sutherland, but also Arthur Fleischmann, Roy le Maistre, Adam Kossowski, and stained glass by Pierre Fourmaintraux. We move on by Underground to Ealing Broadway for a visit to the recently restored St Peter’s Church, Mount Park Road, an Arts & Crafts church designed in 1891 by J.D. Sedding, completed after his death by Henry Wilson with great originality, though the interior decoration and fittings were finished by other hands (notably G.F. Bodley and C.J. Hare as well as E.J. May).

We travel by bus to Hanwell for one of the best-preserved interwar churches in the outer suburbs, St Thomas the Apostle, Boston Road (1934) by Sir Edward Maufe with sculpture by Eric Gill and glass by Moira Forsyth. St Thomas’s is in walking distance from Boston Manor on the Piccadilly Line and there will be an opportunity for refreshments afterwards.
