A VISIT TO THE NORTH EAST

UK EVENT

Thu 16 May 2024

UK Study Tour, 16 – 19 May 2024
Following his well-received visit to Cumbria and the Lake District in 2022, Tony Peart turns his attention to the North East. Based in Newcastle with visits to Sunderland and Durham, the itinerary ranges from Newcastle Civic Centre with its outstanding mid-century art and design to the Gothic splendour of Ushaw College, Durham, and the work of the Pugin family. We will explore the Shipley Art Gallery’s extensive collection of contemporary crafts, visit the Laing Art Gallery and experience glass blowing at the National Glass Centre. There will be a particular focus on late 19th- and early 20th-century decorative arts with visits to many public buildings and churches, including St Andrew’s Roker (the ‘cathedral of the Arts & Crafts Movement’) and the spectacular St George’s, Jesmond, where the Aesthetic Movement designs of T.R. Spence prefigure continental Art Nouveau by over a decade.

A group has now been confirmed for this tour. Please contact David Wurtzel, Chairman of the Events sub-committee, at eventsdas1@gmail.com if you wish to be on the waiting list in case of cancellations.
