Visit to Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge

UK EVENT

Thu 30 Aug 2018

In 1958 Jim and Helen Ede transformed four tumble-down cottages in Cambridge into a visionary home/art gallery where Ede held 'open house' for students every afternoon during term time, introducing them to works by Ben and Winifred Nicholson, Alfred Wallis, Christopher Wood, Joan Miro, Constantin Brancusi, Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. In 1966 Ede gave the house and contents to Cambridge University; in 1970 the house was extended and an exhibition gallery added. More recently the complex has been redeveloped with an Education Wing, improved galleries and the ubiquitous café. DAS members will be given a tour round the house. After this there will be a short guided walk to Newmarket Road nearby where a row of late-19th-century terrace houses provides an interesting social insight.
