THE CRAFT OF COLLABORATION: THE 3RD MARQUESS OF BUTE AND HIS ‘ARTISTIC GROUP’

ZOOM LECTURE

Sun 10 Dec 2023

Zoom lecture by Jessica Insley at 6.00 pm (London). John, 3rd Marquess of Bute, was a scholarly man with a fortune and a passion for working collaboratively with craftsmen. Between 1870 and 1900, Lord Bute formed creative partnerships with William Burges, Robert Rowand Anderson, H.W. Lons-dale, Thomas John Sr, Nathaniel Westlake and Robert Weir Schultz. He christened them ‘the artistic group’. Using objects and records from the Bute Collection at Mount Stuart, this lecture explores this inseparable connection between the design-ers, makers, and this most extraordinary client.
