A TOUR OF HAMPSTEAD GARDEN SUBURB

UK EVENT

Fri 13 Oct 2023

Pevsner described Hampstead Garden Suburb as ‘that most nearly perfect example of the English invention and speciality, the Garden Suburb’. Kate and Martin Webster, long-standing Suburb residents, will lead a walk looking at how Henrietta Barnett’s vision to provide an uplifting place to live catering for all classes was delivered through Raymond Unwin’s master plan and the work of many of the best domestic architects of the early 20th century. Starting in the ‘Artisans’ Quarter’, the tour will focus primarily on the early years of the construction of the Suburb. Tea will be taken at the church of St Jude on the Hill, part of Lutyens’ monumental Central Square, with a chance to view its Walter Starmer murals. After further exploration of the layout and architecture of the Suburb, the afternoon will conclude with a glass of wine at a Suburb house. There will be a limit of 25 participants.
