VISIT TO THE HIGGINS ART GALLERY & MUSEUM BEDFORD

VISIT TO THE HIGGINS ART GALLERY & MUSEUM BEDFORD

UK EVENT

Wed 06 May 2026

This return half-day DAS visit to the Higgins Bedford will focus on two aspects of their permanent collection and their current exhibition. The Higgins has a collection of William Burges’s furniture from his home, Tower House in Kensington, and we will have an opportunity to look at this in detail. The museum also holds other furniture of this period in a nearby display. The second focus of the visit will be the work of Edward Bawden, who left the contents of his home and studio to the Higgins. We will have a curator-led tour of the current exhibition on Bawden’s print-making. The third part of the visit will be an introduction to the current exhibition on Noel Carrington, who grew up in Bedford like his sister Dora Carrington. Both were members of the Bloomsbury Group and Noel went on to found Picture Puffins with Alan Lane after being inspired by children’s books from France and Russia. The exhibition shows how, in making these books, many artists, including Enid Marx and Eric Ravilious, drew directly onto the copper plates.

The visit is from 14.00 to 16.00 and the cost is £30. Please contact Janice Morphet if you would like a place on this visit.
