Modern Gothic: The Inventive Furniture of Kimbel and Cabus, 1863–82

ZOOM LECTURE

Sun 03 Oct 2021

Zoom lecture by Barbara Veith & Medill Harvey, at 6.00 pm (London). Over the course of their nearly 20-year partnership, immigrant cabinet-makers Anton Kimbel (1822–95) and Joseph Cabus (1824–98) developed one of New York City’s leading furniture and decorating firms, capturing national attention with their inventive Modern Gothic designs. They melded British and Continental design sources to create a wide range of forward-looking forms that appealed to an equally adventurous clientele. The lecturers share new scholarship and fresh insight into the firm and its contribution to American design history.
