Angus Patterson, Senior Curator and author of a recent book on the subject, will lead a visit to the recently refurbished Cast Courts at the V&A, three spectacular galleries built in 1873 showing plaster, electrotype and other copies of large scale works of art and architecture from around the world. The tour begins with a visit inside the huge plaster cast of Trajan’s Column. It will include video demonstrations of plaster casting and electrotyping and will show how digital reproductions and 3D-printing have reinvigorated interest in historic copies. The visit will also include an object-handling session with 19th-century electrotypes.
